Family Day took on a bit of a different feel today.
Possibly because we did our utmost to sleep in for as long as possible. Then argue about pancakes. Because … why not.
It was also taken up, for the most part, by Grumpy Pants and his need to do some work today.
You see, a few weeks back, he took a leap and started a new venture. He (and I) were both getting a little fed up with the inconsistency, lack of security and stress of his teaching job.
It was not making for much of an enjoyable life.
So, needs must, he bought a business; a franchise to be exact. Today is the end of his second week in this new role. The first day just happened to coincide with the first day of school holidays and the last two weeks have been a veritable mix of learning, chaos, no routine, going with the flow, the need for an iPad (which we’ve avoided, as a family, until now) and basically not really knowing what’s going on from one day to the next.
Monkey Boy has been heading off to help him most days, and Godzilla and Chippie at times. This is a good thing and not something they’ve been able to do since we left our wedding reception/function venue business.
He is now a Mobile Skips dude … and seems to know what he’s doing.
Aside from us all settling in, it’s not all bad. We’ll see how it goes when school goes back. I somehow suspect the lack of routine and inconsistency of hours will continue …
So, today, partly due to that sleep in thing I mentioned earlier, we all bundled into the car and gave him a bit of a hand.
Skip delivered we went and checked out The Shrine in St Kilda road; something the kids have never done and something neither Grumpy nor I have done for a very, very long time.
I am always overcome by the atmosphere in places like this; I find a kind of peace, but significant distress at the same time. There’s an energy that gets me every time.
Anyhoo, we wandered around for a bit, checked a few things out and learnt a lot more. Educational and without much incident.
Except, possibly, for the Hill Rolling that Chippie decided he’d give a go. Wet Grass Hill Rolling to be exact …
